Instructions for filling Germanium Detector with Liquid Nitrogen

1. If radioactive beam is on follow steps 9 through 19 and 25,
 otherwise follow steps 2 through 25

Access
2. Contact controllers (Ext. 7500), and let them know you intend to
 access DRAGON
3. When entering DRAGON area, access the transfer lock on your left at
 the entrance to the facility and make sure the "Ok to release key"
 LED is illuminated.  If it is not illuminated contact ISAC operations who
 will establish proper conditions (Ext. 7500)
4. Press the "push to release key" button when the LED is on
5. The key is now released for 5 seconds and the "key released"
 LED should be illuminated
6. When the key is released turn it counterclockwise and removed 
 from the ASU box
7. Insert the key into the transfer lock (bottom lock) and turn clockwise
 to release all DRAGON keys
8. Remove the key for ED1 West and unlock the corresponding gate to gain
 access to the Germanium detector

Filling Germanium Detector
9. Check the last time the detector was filled (if it has been un-attended
 for more than one day it will require significantly more liquid Nitrogen 
to fill)
10. Remove the lid and place the plastic funnel in the opening (should be 
 nearby)
11. Proceed to liquid nitrogen tank and put on gloves (should be nearby)
12. Place available thermos or liquid nitrogen transport device under the 
 tap, which is beneath the red handle.
13. Pull up handle slowly and allow nitrogen gas to fill and cool the 
 tubing (with the thermos in place).  
14. Once liquid nitrogen is coming out of tap instead of gas increase 
 flow as you feel comfortable and fill available flask.  You can usually 
 tell that you have liquid instead of gas as there is far less visible 
 gas flying around.
15. Once the flask is full turn off the liquid nitrogen supply and carry 
 the nitrogen over to the detector
16. Pour the nitrogen into the funnel trying to pour directly into the
 center to avoid damaging the funnel.
17. After each filling use the detection rod nearby.  This is a piece
 of metal approximately 40 cm in length with a red end cap.  Lower the
 end without the red cap into the tank until the tape marking is level
 with the detector opening.  If you see nitrogen emerging from the top
 of the rod (it will be obvious) then the detector is full enough.
18. Continue to add nitrogen until the rod indicates that the detector
 is full enough.
19. Remove the funnel and place cap back on detector
20. Record the date and time of filling as well as your name on the
 "Filling Sheet" attached to the detector

Lockup
21. Ensure no one is inside the confines of the fence and lock the ED1
 West gate
22. Insert the gate key back into its corresponding place in the
 transfer lock and turn it clockwise
23. Remove the DRAGON ASU key from the transfer lock and insert it
 back into the ASU release unit and turn it clockwise until the key
 is trapped
24. "DRAGON Locked" signal is now sent to controller which will allow
 for delivery of RIB

Finish
25. Remember to record that you've filled the detector in the counting
 room (date, time and name)
